Chapter 13

Macleod was surprised the next morning when he was invited to breakfast with the family and guests. According to Ivan, his mistress had said it was only fair that Macleod and his team were now looked after in the same way that the guests were. Having no idea where breakfast was going to come from, other than supplied by the Zupci family, Macleod decided that he would accept the invitation and informed the rest of the team. He’d found Hope had been difficult to raise and she spoke to him about Swen and his expedition in the early hours of the morning. Macleod concurred that she’d done the right thing.

‘You might have been very lucky,’ said Macleod. ‘If he had caught you there, effectively catching him red-handed, who knows what would’ve happened.’

‘Have we got any detail on him? Anything we could pull him in for?’ asked Hope.

‘It’s the island that’s the problem. Technically we could grab him if we have anything on him but what do we do with him? Mischa isn’t going to go for that and then we’ll probably get booted off the island and have to go through this much more formally. It would be a delicate matter and the last thing I think we’re going to get backing for is to start operating heavy-handed. Whatever it is that our country wants from Zupci, it’s enough to override this investigation I’m doing and how I’m doing it. You better get yourself together and we’ll head down for breakfast.’

Hope nodded and Macleod left to go to his room while he awaited Clarissa and her to join him. As they made their way down the stairs, Clarissa seemed to be in a good mood.

‘What’s up with you?’ asked Macleod. ‘I’d have thought that being kept here from last night would be something to commiserate on. After all, we’ve got four dead on top of our first body.’

‘But you walk down here,’ said Clarissa, ‘like you don’t even know where you are. Look at some of the artwork down this hall. That’s stunning. Have you seen the colours in that picture up there? Do you know how old it is?’

‘I have no idea,’ said Macleod. ‘I don’t really care. I don’t care what the trappings are around us. We have a murder investigation to get on with, but it’s hard enough to run it without you looking like you’re walking around the best supermarket you’ve ever seen.’

Clarissa gave him a dirty look. ‘Don’t start with me like that just because you want to get home. Look, I get it. I really do. But we’re here; we’re doing a job. Don’t blame me for looking at the bright side of it.’

Macleod wanted to apologise, but Clarissa had already stepped away, walking briskly but turning from him as she watched the paintings along the corridor. They arrived on the ground floor of the house and were led into a large room with what Macleod considered to be the biggest dining table he’d ever seen.
